Hi b.o.b forum members. Like many others, my eating disorder has shifted across the entire spectrum of eating disorders, and I am currently dealing with binge eating disorder/bulimia in the sense that I over exercise to attempt to undo some damage. The thing is, a majority of the time, what makes the urge arise in the first place, is my dieting. I think I have been on a diet every day for the past 9 years and I am still in my twenties.. the only days off my diet have been binge days. I really want to quit. I don't know how to eat normally or trust myself, but I firmly believe this is crucial to my recovery, because often the negative thoughts around 'did i eat over my plan, was this acceptable' - that internal dialogue, just sparks up the urge- which at the moment I am finding very hard to resist. Has anyone got any tips on how to GIVEUP DIETING FOR GOOD? I'm tired of wasting energy on restricting my food and filling my headspace with things that are so unimportant in the grand scheme of life. It doesn't actually serve me anymore. I read on a webpage last night, an article where a girl wrote out a series of questions that went something like this 1)Is dieting working for you 2) Do you want to diet for the rest of your life 3) how do you feel about dieting 4) Are you happy having little flexibility and so on... I asked myself really honestly, and the truth is? I absolutely hate what dieting is doing to my health- especially mental health. It's time to quit, and time to start viewing those pesky dieting messages as neurological junk. cheers everyone

I'm new to this myself but I'd like to say from my experience that stopping dieting and restricting is the only thing that will help this problem. As soon as I start to think in any restrictive manner I can feel myself tensing up and it promotes the eat anything and everything binge. I'm now in my early 50's and have been dealing with this since I was about 14, always thinking that dieting was the only way to fix my "problem", because in reality there was never any other information available. You are in your 20's so my advice would be to deal with this now by eating 3 meals and snacks a day if you're hungry and really allowing yourself to do it without any guilt. If you don't allow yourself to eat what you like (healthy foods and allowing some treats) it all just backfires. I'm hoping that someone with some more experience here may be able to give you some good advice too.
Don't be like me and still dealing with this when you're 52. Best wishes.

I really appreciate this advice, and I can see myself having a life long battle if I don't address it now- but hey, you know what's really awesome.. is you're well on your way to a free mind, a healthier brain .. and 50's is when life begins - so my parents say lol. Hi there members, I am really struggling to let go of the dieting mentality and it is backfiring big time. It is fueling my binge urges, and I am obeying them every few days. I am terrified to give up dieting because I worry I will gain more weight... I am currently the heaviest I have ever been, ironically- due to dieting - then binging. Has anybody here successfully given up dieting and found that their urges have lessened and haven't gained a whole lot of weight? I would really appreciate some feedback if possible. I highly recommend the book by Josie Spinardi "how to have your cake and your skinny jeans too" and the forums at happyeaters.net. If you join, you'll get access to read people's journals who are also on the road to recovery. I highly recommend Mottainai's journal. She's made incredible progress from a diet ninny head case to happy eater. I'm not really there yet myself, but it seems definitely nothing is to be gained from constantly dieting and bingeing. That doesn't mean giving yourself permission to binge and hurt yourself with food either. If you're at your highest weight now, I don't think you'll go higher from stopping dieting and trying to just eat regular meals without restriction.

Hi, this is my first time on this forum! I just started Brain Over Binge. I keep a food journal (when/what I eat and where, and how I feel) but don't count calories and it's really hard to not count calories....Does anyone here count calories? Is counting calories/WW points detrimental to overcoming binge eating?
